I say ‘not so healthy’ because I know it’s the first question you’ll ask after this,
How can Coke be healthy for a Fat Loss tool?
Yes, I said it, Coke but of all things.
The can you crave after a night out on the town or just want to knock one back after a long evening..
Believe me, I used to have a lot of the stuff until I realised the pointless calories and sugar I was putting into my body – but that was the younger days..
Today I still have it, just the ZERO Calorie options which is what sprung this small blog today.
And it’s funny because about 2 years back this blog would of been a whole lot different – I probably would of bitched about ‘Aspartame’ and how these drinks are no better than the others etc. until I started to look into the research behind it that is 😉
I’ll get to WHY it can be a fat loss tool in my eyes in a minute but first here’s the low-down.
If you want to research any supplement really – you cannot beat examine.com and this is where I’m pulling this quote directly from;
There are no studies that indicate any long-term health risks from drinking diet soda. Diet Soda (defined as calorie free carbonated beverages sweetened with aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame-potassium, or other non-caloric or minimally caloric sweeteners) is not harmful to health, well-being, or body composition. (1)
Now wether your diet is TERRIBLE and all you eat is processed foods and the likes, having a Diet Drink will just make it ‘less terrible’ really. But if you’re generally ‘healthy’ – eat a plenty of Veg etc. – you’ve nothing to worry about.
Funny because in the past I would of said, stay 100miles away from the stuff. How times have changed…
In fact the only downside to drinking ‘diet’ drinks is having teeth like a hillbilly, well, the research is there to prove it being ‘negative’ to your dental health anyways – take it how you want. (2)
So here’s the scenario – you’ve decided it’s time to make a change to your lifestyle. You want to get into the health/training game but your Nutrition game is, well let’s just say, not the best.
Now this is where we coach all our members using the same principles – and as cheesy as it sounds;
The #1 Goal is just to do better from where you are now.
Simple isn’t it?
If you eat zero veg right now for example, isn’t adding one meal with Veg a major plus? YES.
It all comes back to the sustainability approach – because if you’re reading this, you’re either sick of hearing the pure shite that floats around in this Fitness Industry or you’re trying to learn some habits related to your goals.
Now back to the coke as a Fat Loss Tool…
Let’s say you love the cans of coke and you have at least one a day or a few times throughout the week.
Not to mention, the morning after a night out too eh 😉
Anyhow one Can of Regular Coke = 140 Calories.
Isn’t it ‘better’ to replace that with a diet coke or coke zero?
The taste may not be the exact same the first time around, but straight away you’ve TAKEN OUT 140 pointless calories from your diet but still kept in ‘the coke’.
Again – Doing better.
Again – Sustainability.
AGAIN – (And Forgetting other Factors) – Overall Energy Balance will always determine you’re Wether you lose, maintain or gain weight.
That my friends is taking one step forward in the right direction in my opinion.
Now it’s NOT to say you go off and replace a load of other things with ‘less terrible’ options – that’s not the point here.
The point is, if you enjoy your Sweet things and want to keep an odd diet coke or something similar in your Nutrition throughout the week, go for it.
If it proves to you that YOU’VE made the better decision rather than just restricting the stuff you love, you’ll make better decisions in a tonne of other aspects, believe me.
So if you’re one of those, Diet drinks will kill you, either read the research or leave this blog haha 🙂
As always it’s my own opinion so take it how you like.
If making a simple decision likes this causes you to reduce overall calories, then it’s the right step in your Journey for getting in shape in my eyes.
Your teeth on the other-hand – you might want to mind those.
Now, I’m off for a coke Zero.
